Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas produced by malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, ovens, stoves, gas dryers, and emergency generators.
Check the batteries every spring and fall (at the beginning and end of daylight saving time, as a reminder).

Install carbon monoxide detectors in every bedroom.Check the detectors monthly to be sure they're working, and change the batteries at least once a year or choose smoke alarms that use long-life (ten-year) batteries. Install a smoke detector in every room in your house.It's best to buy brand-new safety gates that display a seal from the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA).Instead, install a gate that screws to the wall – it's much more secure. Never use pressure gates at the top of stairs.(Otherwise, you'll be too tempted to leave them open when you're in a hurry.) Look for gates that your child can't dislodge but that you can easily open and close.You can also use them to contain your child in a safe space, or to keep them out of the kitchen or bathroom. Install safety gates to block your child's access to stairways.Block openings wider than 4 inches on railings with plastic garden fencing, Plexiglas, or other material. Use doorstops or door holders on doors and door hinges to prevent injuries to hands and fingers.Mark sliding doors and other expanses of glass with colorful stickers so your child doesn't run into them.The Window Covering Safety Council has directions for retrofitting older corded window coverings. Anchor continuous-loop cords to the floor or wall, and make sure that tasseled pull cords are as short as possible. Keep windows locked when they're closed.The guards should fit snugly but not so securely that an older child or adult can't remove them in case of an emergency. Or, install window guards that have bars no more than 4 inches apart. Install window stops to prevent windows from opening more than 4 inches.Make sure your child can't reach or open any window more than 4 inches. Keep your child's crib or bed, and all other furniture away from windows.Make sure any storage chests have air holes in case your child gets trapped inside and a spring-loaded hinge to prevent the lid from slamming shut on your child's hand.Keep drawers closed and latched so they don't become ladders.Place floor lamps behind other furniture so your child can't pull them over.

Anchor a flat-screen TV with safety straps or mount it on a wall so it can't fall on your child.Secure furniture that can topple (bookcases, bureaus, filing cabinets) to the walls.Attach corner and edge guards on all hard edges and sharp corners.
